Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia can be influenced by chronic inflammation resulting from a pro-inflammatory diet, which contributes to elevated cholesterol levels and changes in nutritional status. This analytical observational study, using a cross-sectional design, aimed to determine the relationship between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) score and total cholesterol levels and Body Mass Index (BMI) in patients with hypercholesterolemia. Subjects were selected based on inclusion criteria, namely hypercholesterolemia patients aged >20 years at Pakusari Public Health Center, and exclusion criteria including memory impairment, physical disability, and pregnancy. A total of 88 subjects were selected through purposive sampling from 467 hypercholesterolemia patients at Pakusari Public Health Center in 2023. DII scores were obtained from a Semi Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) based on 36 nutrient parameters, while BMI was measured from height and weight, and total cholesterol was measured using an Easy Touch GCU device. Analysis used the Pearson test (DII–total cholesterol) and Spearman test (DII–BMI). Results showed a significant and positive relationship between DII and total cholesterol levels, while the relationship between DII and BMI was negative but not significant.
